Italy,
Greece and Spain are the worst violators of good water
usage practices in Europe, according to a World Wide
Fund for Nature (WWF) report cited by Associated Press
on Friday.
The
WWF report surveyed 23 European countries and found
excess water consumption to be a problem in virtually
all of them. The study's author, Lucia de Stefano,
determined that despite an EU law requiring nations
to clean up their waterways by 2015, 70 percent of
European governments were failing to do enough to
conserve and clean up their water sources.

Italy,
Greece and Spain were singled out as the worst offenders in
this regard. Croatia, Ireland, Latvia and Portugal were cited
for the lack of public interest in water conservation.
Finland,
France, Switzerland, Sweden and Belgium earned high marks
for preserving wetlands and managing floods and pollution
through legislation (Elsa Wenzel, AP/Environmental News
Network, Nov. 14).
