Archie
sighted before Dino!
|
It
may come as a surprise for many to know that Archie,
the cockroach was around a long time before the first
gigantic dinosaur ever walked the earth. The most
amazing observation is that between the Archie who
walked the earth 300 million years ago and the present
day Archie, there's not too much change in body design
or even size for that matter. That means Archie may
be a unique product of evolution favoured by nature
to maintain constancy in form.

The
cockroach fossil that has been discovered is about 3.5 inches
long and is believed to belong to the Carboniferous period. The
fossil species called, Arthropleura pustulatus, has been
very well preserved. Legs, antennae, mouth parts and veins
on wings and fine bumps on the body can all be distinctly
seen. The fossil discovery was made by Ohio State University
geogologists at the 7- 11 mine, in Ohio. Discovered by Easterday
and Gregory McComas of Ohio State University, the team have
presented their findings at the annual meeting of the Geological
Society of America in Boston.
