The
main focus of research to be carried out with grant funds
is to identify and protect the earth's biodiversity hot
spots. These areas cover just about 1.4% of the Earth but
are home to more than 2/3rds of all the terrestrial species
present on the planet.
This
is the second fund giving exercise that the foundation has
been involved in, in the past few months. In October of
this year, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation donated
$600 million to the California Institute of Technology.
