New
role for IOP testing in cats.

Ofri
et al at the department of small animal clinical sciences,
Koret school of veterinary medicine, Rehovot, Israel
have tried to correlate intraocular pressure (IOP)
with progesterone concentrations in cats. The goal
of their study was to understand changes in reproductive
status with fluctuations in IOP in cats.
|
|
The
study was carried out on 75 sexually intact domestic shorthair
cats scheduled to be neutered, including 28 males, 21 females
not in estrus, 13 females in estrus, and 13 pregnant females.
Intraocular pressure was measured by IOP while progesterone
concentrations were tested by RIA.
The
investigators observed that IOP in female cats in estrus
was significantly higher than IOP in female cats not in
estrus. The progesterone concentrations were observed to
have a significant role in IOP changes in pregnant cats.
