Using sunshine for surgery in rats

From the Ben- Gurion University in Israel comes news that scientists have successfully used theHealing rays of the sun for surgery.

Jeffrey Gordon and colleagues were able to use sunshine to remove nearly 1 cubic centimeter of damaged liver tissue in two rats.

In their experiment, concentrated sunlight is collected and then transmitted into the operating theater via a flexible, 20 metre long high-transmission optical fiber with a numerical aperture of 0.66.

The fibre supplies a power density of several watts per mm2 - a power density that is on par with surgical lasers.
