Greenpeace
Urges South Asia To Adopt Waste Regulations
Monday,
June 14, 2004
South Asia is increasingly being used as a dumping
ground for toxic waste, with global waste traders
sending used lead acid batteries, old tires, and
medical and electronic waste to the Philippines,
Thailand and Cambodia in recent years, according
to Greenpeace.

"The
Southeast Asian region appears to be a particularly
susceptible target to international waste traders
due to the absence of a regional regulatory framework,
coupled with weak national regulatory regimes,"
the group said in a statement. |
It urged the 10 member states of the Association
of Southeast Asian Nations to adopt the U.N. Environment
Program's Basel
Convention, an international pact that controls the
trade of hazardous waste (Associated
Press/Environmental News Network, June 11).
