Villagers kill 200 dogs after girl mauled to death

People in a village in Madhya Pradesh killed 200 stray dogs in two days after a pack of dogs mauled a seven-year-old girl to death.

According to reports received here, Kaafreen was killed Friday by some stray dogs in Parasia village of Chhindwara district while returning home after finishing work as a domestic help.
She was living with her widowed mother Jameela, who also worked as domestic help.

Police said an unsuspecting Jameela recognised her daughter's body from the tattered clothes lying nearby when she went over to see a half-eaten body that some villagers had recovered after driving the pack away.

Shocked members of the village council decided to kill all stray dogs at an emergency meeting and went into action with the concurrence of the sub-divisional magistrate.

"We have killed over 200 stray dogs of the village in the last two days. We will continue till all dogs have been eliminated from our village," said village chief Dhandoo Prasad.

He said groups of villagers armed with sticks, rods, kerosene oil and ropes start hunting for dogs in the village from morning.
