Trick your pet with the walking Hat Trick
game and others
Introduction
Objects of everyday use can be utilized to make interesting
and useful games for your pets. Whether it is your hat,
or an empty tin can or even a pebble or your worn out clothes,
each one of them can be developed to make interesting and
useful games for your pets.
Hat Trick Surprise
 |
What
you need to do to play this game with your pets
is to have at least four to five hats. The ideal
place to play this game would be inside the house,
preferably in the balcony or on the terrace or anywhere
in your house where you have a large room with lots
of space to run and jump around.
|
The reason that this game would be better played indoors
is because you need a smooth surface for your hats to move
in to action. Take at least five hats. Attach a small rubber
ball beneath each one of them. The hats that you use to
play this game should be made of some very light material
which at the same time is quite resilient and strong.
 |
Take
a thick strong coir rope or any other fiber that
is comfortable for your hands and at the same time
is strong. Make an aperture in each one of the hats.
Pass the rope through it so that all the hats are
now connected.
There should be a small food packet hidden beneath
one of the hats. The game would be best played with
four or five dogs or cats.
|
 |
To
play this game, you need to stand in one corner
of the room and then place the five hats in a row
-which any way they will form since they are connected
to one another by strings.
|
Now, you can keep the hats in a row running across the floor.
When the string is pulled at either end, the hats will automatically
start bouncing. The game ends when your pet has correctly
been able to halt the moving hat containing food. That may
be a rather tough job!
Tin clanker wheel!
To play this game you will need a lot of tins - at least
10 -12 tins. The tins could be linked one to another in
a circular ring. You need to fill each of the tins with
small pebbles - 10 12 in number.
It is best to play this game with your pets in the garden.
Of course, you must make sure that your neighbours will
not mind. There's going to be a lot of clinking and clanking
sounds that can be cacophonically loud.
 |
Somewhat
like a merry go round - the tins cans should keep
rotating at a slightly faster speed than the ones
which your pets can keep track of. One of the tins
should have a food snack hidden.
|
The game
is all about your pet or pets being clever enough to identify
the tin with the snack and also being able to stop the rotation
of the tin wheel.
This game can be quite exciting for your pets, especially
because of the circular movement and the clanking sounds.
Pebble Maze
|
|
To
play this game, your pets will need to be really
alert and attentive. It involves a certain degree
of visual recognition in being able to select matching
pieces. This game would be best played if your pet
happens to be a large breed dog. Of course, you
can try playing this game with your pet, irrespective
of whether your pet is a dog, cat, parrot or pigeon.
On the contrary, you may find your pet parrot or
pigeon enjoying this game a little more than your
dog or cat. Of course, if you are pet birds are
going to play this game make sure that the pebbles
are all brightly coloured.
|
 |
What
you need to do in order to play the game is to select
a lot of pebbles. Then, you need to have two pairs
of identical looking pebbles. What you need to make
sure is that the pebbles that you choose are not
too large or too small or too rough. The surface
should be smooth. Pebbles as those found on the
banks of the rivers are ideal to play this game.
|
Another
factor that you must take care to bear in mind is that the
size of the pebbles should suit your pet's ability to lift
while at the same time not swallowing it. You need to be
really careful about that. Alternatively, instead of pebbles,
you can also use, differently coloured rubber balls of different
sizes.
Once you have collected a set of at least twenty pebble
pairs, you could then take each of the pebble pairs and
give them a distinct identity.
 |
For
one pebble pair, may be you could dip in a solution
of soup and let it dry. Another pair of pebbles,
you could dip them with a little bit of gravy. Similarly,
the third pair of pebbles, you could coat them in
sugar syrup. The main focus would be to give each
pair of pebbles a distinct identity and appearance
so that your pet can immediately and correctly match
one member of the pebble pair with another.
|
 |
To
play the game, you could probably draw about 12
large rectangular squares. Now, in each one of the
squares you must place a pebble. The other set of
pebbles should be with you.
|
To start
playing the game, you need to throw each pebble in to the
air and to a distance of at least 4 - 5 metres. The game
would be played by your pet correctly being able to locate
the pebble, bringing it back and placing it in the correct
square, based on its appearance and flavour.
Coat Hanger disguise
To play this game, what would you would need is a lot of
really worn out and frayed coats which you can discard.
You will need to have at least 4 or 5 sets of old clothes.
You can also get some mannequins or make one yourself using
some cotton and old clothes.
 |
The
game is played by dressing your mannequin in one
of your old clothes. You can then selectively place
four or five of the mannequins in different corners
of your house. This game is best played when you
are away and your pet is alone in the house.
|
It
can keep your pet distracted and occupied. What you can
do is to hide four or five musical alarms, one in each
of the mannequins. The alarms should be set to ring at
different times during the day.
The person who is available in the house while you are
away should be instructed to play a taperecorder hidden
in one of the mannequins at selected intervals of the
day. A recording of your voice talking to your pet in
a calm and soothing manner should be played.
Your pet's lunch and dinner could be hidden within two
separate mannequins. When it's nearing lunch and dinner
time, only if your pet can successfully retrieve the lunch
pack hidden within one of the mannequins, can your pet
have lunch or dinner.
Searching for the hidden lunch pack could be a simple
or complicated exercise depending on how well you hide
the food packet. A main advantage of devising the game
is that your pet will not feel so lonely during the time
that you are away because of the surrogate presence of
so many mannequins and your taperecorded voice.
Besides this, your pet's mind will be completely distracted
in searching for the food. That will encourage activity
and exercise rather than your pet slouching in one corner
waiting for you to come home in the evening to take him
or her out for a walk.
Conclusion
Games that induce some amount of trickery and mimicry
can be very fascinating for your pet. Play some of these
games and notice the difference in your pet's personality.
