Indian
government enforces restrictions on import of pet animals
In
the recent past, India has witnessed an alarming rise in
the number of pet animals and endangered species of animals
entering the country without a valid license. It has been
observed many times that the exotic breeds of dogs enter
the country solely for commercial purposes. Besides, the
lack of compliance to adequate quarantine and vaccination
protocols mandatory for the entry of animals in to India
poses a tremendous risk. Therefore, in the light of these
disturbing observations, the recent declaration made by
the government of India seems well timed.
The
declaration made by the government of India makes it mandatory
that live animals not be allowed to be enter the country
without valid import license. All those wishing to import
any live animals in India now should apply to the Directorate
General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) for a valid import license.
The issue of license would be made only after clearance
of stringent protocols.
